Today I want to think about how we can rid our body of harmful toxins.
Firstly where do toxins come from?
- Water: Did you know tap water contains an array of chemicals including chlorine, ammonia, flouride and hormones? It is always best to filter your tap water
- Food: Our food contains heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, colourings, GMOs and hormones
- Other: Alcohol, exhaust fumes, tobacco smoke, environmental pollutants.
The list goes on.
While our bodies are very clever at ridding us of these toxins, they are not always equipped to deal with today’s overload of chemicals.
Toxicity in our system will show as:
- Fatigue
- Mental fogginess, anxiety, low mood and headaches
- Under eye-circles
- Digestive problems
- Poor immunity
- Cellulite
- Halitosis
- Premature ageing
How do we overcome this?
- Avoid heavy metals – key sources are tap water and mercury fillings
- Eat organic wholefoods
- Use environmentally friendly products
I looked up the ingredients for talcum powder for an assignment in the nutrition course I am doing today. I was horrified to find out a lot of talcum powders contain or did contain asbestos. My mum used to use talcum powder continuously and it now seems very suspicious that she ended up with lung cancer before her passing.
How to detox your skin
Dry skin brushing:
- This stimulates the lymphatic system
- Improves immunity
- Improves circulation
- removes dead skin cells
- Stress relief
- Energiser
Always start at the feet and head towards the heart. Use natural, hard bristles only.
Take a salt bath:

I love these and I have an epsom salt bath three times a week. You always come out of the bath feeling relaxed and at peace.
Sea salt, epsom salt and Himalayan salt are the best. The acidic toxins are drawn out of the body and into the bath. If you are a particularly cold person then wetting a cold flannel and resting this on your head while having a salt bath for twenty minutes will raise your body temperature. This will also alkalize your body and bring it back into balance.
Sauna:
A sauna flushes out toxins and increases circulation. It improves the immune system and it is very healing on the joints and for people who suffer from acute arthritis.
However, always take a cold shower after a sauna and rest, plus drink plenty of water.
Bare foot walk in the grass:

This stimulates the entire body through reflex zones on the feet. It improves circulation and reduces stress. The terminology is known as ‘grounding’ and it has powerful anti-inflammatory effects.
In my next post I will discuss liver detoxification by far my favourite of subjects.
I hope you have found this post useful? If you do have any queries or comments then I would love to hear from you.
